The word ritual makes me think of something that goes on regularly, but you’ve heard that dogs have no sense of time, right? Anyone who walks a dog on regular basis knows that the dog will let you know when it’s time for a walk!

They’re like kids – our pets get used to our schedules and come to expect things to happen at a certain time. But in my case, my schedule can vary every day – and yours is probably like that too.

And then we wonder why our pets have strange behaviors sometimes, like chewing, peeing in the house, or getting hyper when we just want them to settle down. Uncertainty can cause anxiety, and I see this so often with my clients and their pets.

So what can you do to calm them down and help them feel more secure? You can do a lot of things, like spending regular time with them, making sure they exercise, feeding them at similar times, and using flower essence therapies. Another thing you can do is develop some rituals that help you bond with your pets. It can be something very simple, like taking ten minutes to sit and stroke your pet’s fur and talk in a calm, soothing voice.

You may not be used to it, but I recommend that you talk to your pets – really tell them about what’s going on – like when your work schedule changes, when something big is happening, like moving, and also just everyday events. Talk to your cat about your day. Tell your dog about your lunch meeting.

Simply hearing your voice and feeling your touch helps ground your animal friends and help them feel safe and content. You many find your own pulse slowing and your body relaxing. You’ll start to look forward to this daily ritual of slowing down and bonding with your companion.

It’s been shown in scientific studies that spending time with animals is not only a health booster for your animals, but for you as well.
